Travel, Accommodation and Food in Thailand

Travel, Accommodation and Food in Thailand
By Matthew Kepnes

  • Visiting Thailand - Great to Visit

Thailand is a great country to visit because contrary to popular belief, getting to and around the country is very easy. You can get to Thailand by bus, air or rail from many different countries all over the world. There are even private chartered tours to Thailand and there is also the possibility of taking some sort of a package deal which covers your food, accommodation, travel and sometimes even activities when you get there.

  • Airlines

Thailand is great to visit because of how easy it is to get there. Thai Airlines flies to many of the cities in Thailand from departure points all over the world. Not only that, but many Asian airlines have flights to Thailand as well. If you're staying in another Asian country such as Japan or China, it's extremely easy to get to Thailand. Thailand in essence can serve as a great hub to explore the rest of Asia as it is located centrally.

  • Trains and buses

You can get to Thailand very easily from any of the neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh or India using very reliable train and bus services. Trains especially can be a lifelong experience because of all the different people you can have the potential to meet while traveling. Inside Thailand, trains and buses are also very reliable for getting around.

  • Where to stay

It's great to visit Thailand throughout the year. The weather is temperate, sub-tropical and tropical. Regardless of where you'd like to stay in Thailand, there is always accommodation available to meet all of your needs. You can stay in luxury hotels in some of the biggest cities as well as the tourist beaches such as Phuket. You can often rent serviced apartments, guesthouses and villas. Thailand also has an excellent homestay industry. You can through a package deal be set up with a family in a village. This is known as village tourism and Thailand is one of the leaders in the world using this form of sustainable tourism.
Finally, for the more adventurous, Thailand also has many cheap but good youth hostels as well as camping grounds. Furthermore, it's also possible to stay in health resorts and spas throughout Thailand as some of the best hot springs and thermal baths in the world can be found in this Asian country.

  • Gourmet cuisine

Another reason why Thailand is so great to visit is that the food is absolutely exquisite. In many places, food is available 24 hours a day, so it makes no difference when you get hungry there will always be something to eat. You can order food directly to your hotel room or eat at one of the fine restaurants in the downtown areas of the largest cities. You can also eat at some of the fantastic fast food places, which are nothing like Western fast food. They use only fresh vegetables, meat and rice and you can get amazing meals. Thai food can be sweet, spicy, savory or any mix of the above.
Matthew was an English teacher in Thailand for two years and traveled extensively around it. He's spent a lot of time visiting Thailand and especially traveling around Chiang Mai because he thinks it is the best city in the country.

Medical Tourism in Thailand

Medical Tourism in Thailand
  • By Dave Berger

There is a lot of talk about going overseas for heath care. It is known as medical tourism.
A couple years ago I was vacationing in Thailand. Thailand is known for pristine beaches, Buddhist temples, lovely people and now medical tourism.

I am over 50, in pretty bad shape and I smoke. As I was walking down the street, I had a sharp pain shoot through my head behind my eyes.
Let me tell you, it scared the crap out of me. I thought I might be having a stroke. I had never worried about this kind of thing before. I hate getting old.

I had a physical at the Bangkok chain of hospital that have facilities all over the country. These hospitals cater to expats and medical tourists. I had received what I considered to be excellent care at a greatly reduced price compared to the US. I called and made an appointment.

They still had my stats on file from the last time I had visited. My "regular" assigned doctor at the hospital is a cardiologist. Since the pain was in my brain, they assigned me to a neurologist.
The neurologist performed a complete physical including reflex tests. She drew some blood and sent it out for testing. She concluded that I had not had a stroke and guessed that I probably had a nasal infection.
Much as I like and respect Thai doctors, I did not feel comfortable with the prognosis. I asked her if she was sure. Without being at all upset, she said if I wanted an MRI to confirm her opinion, I could be scheduled within an hour or so. I decided to go ahead with it.

Just in case you are not familiar, an MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is the big donut looking machine that they slide people into on TV.
I went to a very new and modern part of the hospital. I was sent to a changing room with lockable lockers to undress. I changed into a hospital robe and was slid into the donut. They put a cage around your head so you do not move much.

Some MRI's require an injection of a magnetic dye so your circulatory system can be mapped. In my case, they were only doing the brain so it was not necessary. After about 45 minutes of loud clanking, I was done. I was directed back upstairs to wait for the neurologists to explain the results.
Several large 17X24" x-rays were produced. The computer diagnosis was written right on the film. It said I probably had sinusitus, an inflammation of the sinuses. I was prescribed an antibiotic.
They also gave me copies of my brain scans. In addition to a new tan, I got medical tourist souvenirs and a great story.

What would this cost in the US? $500? $1000? $2500? more?
Total Cost: $175USD

  • By Justin Lacombe

Affordable cosmetic surgery like breast implants, tummy tuck, liposuction, face lift, and rhinoplasty are available by qualified plastic surgeons in Thailand.

These specialty companies has brought focus on elective surgeries to the medical tourism market. While there are many Medical Tourism companies sprouting up all over, until recently, nobody has been specializing in cosmetic & dental procedures. With a target on aesthetic/cosmetic surgeries, they have been able to select facilities that offer premium services in this field. Bundled with phenomenal follow-up care and vast local knowledge, medical tourists will agree that this is the route to take for individuals interested solely in cosmetics and dentistry.

The current global economic crisis coupled with the popularity of cosmetic surgery holidays has fueled one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. Medical Tourism and Cosmetic Tourism is a booming industry throughout the Western world. While some may question the quality of care available at some of these destinations, those who have seen what is offered certainly do not. The facilities in these third world countries are anything but third world hospitals. Many of these facilities are equally equipped to their Western counterparts. Even ex president George W Bush entrusted the expertise of the physicians at the Bangkok Hospital Group while he was on tour through South East Asia. His personal physician was amazed by the level of competency of the staff.

These capable hospitals and the excellent tourism options available in Thailand make it a good choice for the medical tourist. Surgical goals can be easily achieved with affordable and high quality cosmetic surgery in Thailand.

Yacht Charter in Thailand

Yacht Charter in Thailand
  • By Ken Jones

The choice of yacht charter in Thailand is wide and includes; bareboat yacht charter, luxury crewed yacht charter, skippered yacht charter, monohull and catamaran charter and both sail and motor yacht charter.
Many of beautiful islands of Thailand are only accessible by sea and a yacht charter is a great way to explore this area. The main yacht charter area is amongst the islands of the Andaman Sea.

Different indigenous cultures have existed in Thailand since the time of the Baan Chiang culture. Due to its geographical location, Thai culture has always been greatly influenced by India and China as well as the neighbouring cultures of south east Asia. The first Thai state is traditionally considered to be the Buddhist kingdom of Sukhothai founded in 1238. A century later, the larger Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya overshadowed Sukhothai's power. Ayuthaya fell in 1767 to Burmese forces. The current era of Thai history began in 1782 following the establishment of Bangkok as capital of the Chakri dynasty under King Rama I the Great.

European powers began travelling to Thailand in the 16th century. Despite European pressure, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been colonized by a European power. Despite this, Western influence led to many reforms in the 19th century and major concessions to British trading interests. This included the loss of the three southern provinces, which later became Malaysia's three northern states.
In 1932, a bloodless revolution resulted in a new constitutional monarchy. During the war, Thailand was allied with Japan. Yet after the war, it became an ally of the United States. Thailand then went through a series of coups d'état, but eventually progressed towards democracy in the 1980s
Thailand, Phuket and the Andaman Sea have gained a reputation for being a top yacht charter destination. There is an abundance of islands to visit, some developed but most not. Several national parks and reefs offer great opportunities for diving and fishing. Most of these picturesque islands of the Andaman Sea are accessible by boat alone and a yacht charter is one of the few ways to see them.

Yacht charter in Thailand is relatively easy and relaxing with well charted waters, small tidal ranges, an absence of strong currents, and an abundance of sheltered yacht anchorages with excellent holding ground. Sailing conditions are close to perfect all year round. Basic necessities like fuel, water, fresh produce and provisions are readily available and may be found on many of the islands. The waters are teeming with fish which you can catch yourself or which you can buy or barter for with fishermen. Most of the islands will also have inexpensive restaurants where you can enjoy Thailand's great cuisine.

Thai cuisine blends five fundamental tastes: sweet, spicy, sour, bitter and salty. Some common ingredients used in Thai cuisine include garlic, chillies, lime juice, lemon grass, and fish sauce. The staple food in Thailand is rice, particularly the jasmine variety rice, also known as Hom Mali rice, which is included in almost every meal.

Phuket has emerged as a leader in Thailand's thriving tourism industry. As the hub of the Andaman Sea and Thailand's largest island, Phuket is the perfect base for a yacht charter. There are beautiful remote islands and beaches, crystal clear waters, fascinating geography in addition to restaurants, nightlife and great shopping. From Phuket there is immediate access to sailing in stunning scenery and literally hundreds of isolated yacht anchorages from which to choose.

The Thai people are legendary for their welcome: Thailand is often called the " Land of Smiles". The cuisine of Thailand is probably one of the best in the world and eating out is so cheap that there is no temptation to cook on the yacht. Thailand is a romantic and alluring destination for any yacht charter holiday.
The international airport on Phuket offers direct connections to many international destinations in addition to connecting flights from Bangkok. Thai is the official language and but English is spoken widely. The currency is the Thai. US Dollars are used extensively. Major credit cards may be accepted in hotels, restaurants and some shops.

Thailand has two distinct seasons. From November to April the weather is consistently sunny and dry with temperatures at around 30°C degrees. The predominantly light to moderate northeast winds are ideal for sailing. From May to October the southwest winds pick up and are sometimes quite strong with occasional squalls. Weather conditions during this period are generally good. Although you can expect rain showers but they tend to be short lived. Winds blow from 5-20 knots over the two seasons.

Phang Nga Bay is a typical Thai yacht anchorage with the stunning sea-mountains that rise vertically out of turquoise waters. Numerous safe anchorages are available in the sheltered bay. Use a tender or dinghy to explore the small coves, intriguing caves and inland lakes.

The waters around the islands off Krabi are crystal clear. Although Krabi can be crowded, its beaches are stunning. Phra Nang beach is particularly dramatic with its mountainous rock pillars that tower over creating one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Koh Dam Group is suitable for an overnight stop. Koh Dam Khwan has a beautiful sandy split beach that is only revealed at mid tide. This is a lovely spot to anchor off and enjoy a few secluded hours with nothing else around.

The Phi Phi Islands are among the most spectacular of Thailand with their magnificent scenery, secluded bays and white sandy beaches. Enjoy the restaurants and live entertainment offered on the island.
Langkawi with its 99 surrounding islands is a paradise that longs to be discovered. Tourism has is on the increase. Only 4 of these islands are inhabited. If you are looking for an idyllic isolated experience these are the perfect cruising grounds for you. A one way yacht charter from Phuket requires 10 days and crew.
Diving in Thailand is great. The waters of the Andaman Sea are filled with a wonderful diversity of marine life, including coral and some of old shipwrecks for diving enthusiasts to discover. Lots of boats equipped with scuba diving equipment and many diving centres around the Islands.

There are several well known sailing regattas in Thailand; Visit in December and join in the celebrations surrounding the annual Phuket King's Cup Regatta that attracts some of the best world's yachtsmen. With a range of yacht classes from racing yachts, sport boats, cruisers and classics. QBE Phang bay Regatta, held annually over Chinese New Year, is Phuket's newest Regatta. It is fast gaining a reputation as one of the most fun Regattas in Asia.

Medical Tourism Guide For Medical Treatment Abroad

Medical Tourism Guide For Medical Treatment Abroad
  • By Zoumanan M. Debe

A global economic recession is at hand, but it is no secret that the United States is one of the most affected countries all over. Many citizens are doing their best to make ends meet, even those with urgent health and medical concerns who are waiting in line for treatments. A recent but increasingly popular trend in the American health community is medical tourism. Also known as medical travel, health tourism, overseas healthcare, or healthcare travel, medical tourism is a broad term encompassing all sorts of overseas travel to receive medical, dental, or surgical treatments. Read more of this guide and get a better understanding.

  • Reasons for Receiving Treatment Abroad

Various reasons abound for the thousands of Americans who travel overseas to receive medical care abroad. The primary reason is the huge savings they get from having their treatments abroad instead of in the U.S. In India, Thailand, Bolivia, and Argentina, four of the hottest medical tourism spots, a person can receive surgical treatment that costs up to 90 percent less than here, without crimping on the quality of treatment received. Furthermore, many patients in the U.S. are relegated to a long waiting list where it takes up to a year before they can have treatments. Many medical tourism destinations, such as Singapore and Bangalore, allow you to have the operation right after the day you hop off the plane.

  • Medical Tourism Guide to Destinations

By far, the most popular destination is India, where many facilities are accredited by the U.S. Joint Commission International and the treatments are for complex abnormalities, such as cancer, eye disorders, diabetes, infertility, heart problems, and orthopaedics. Other treatments may also be for stress management, facial and body procedures, weight management, sex change, and hair replacement. Other countries that have established themselves in this burgeoning industry are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, Israel, Malaysi, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore.

  • Considerations for Choosing a Destination

It is important that you plan your trip way ahead of the date of the medical procedure. Applying for a long leave at work is a must; so is incorporating a long leeway at the end of the procedure to allow you time to recuperate or visit your medical practitioner for post-operation treatments or checkups. Do your research on the destination you plan to visit and the medical procedure and have your current physician become actively involved. He will still be your doctor after the operation when you get back home. Also, think of possible language barriers. Some medical tourism hotspots where most people can understand and speak English fluently are Singapore, India, the Philippines, and South Africa.

  • Risks of Medical Tourism

Generally, the quality of healthcare you can get abroad is up to par with that you can receive for such an exorbitant price here. It is not medical standards that some people are wary of, but several environmental factors inherent to the destination. For instance, warm and tropical countries such as India and Thailand have higher rates of infectious diseases (i.e. dysentery, influenza, tuberculosis, etc.) which are not encountered as frequently in the north. But by choosing the right hospital the risks of medical tourism are quite small.

Discover Top Medical Tourism Facilities Amongst Extreme Poverty

Discover Top Medical Tourism Facilities Amongst Extreme Poverty
  • By Jay Siva

You may be wondering how it is that a third world country can offer medical services at a state of the art facility. How is it possible that a country can offer services to foreigners that it cannot offer to all of its own citizens?

It may seem, at first glance, that it is wrong to have multi-million dollar state of the art facilities sitting amidst extreme poverty. One has to look beyond the surface to see what the intent is. The answer is simply that countries such as India and Thailand have a vision and a mission to use the income from medical tourism to revitalize their economic system, and to use that money to provide aid to those in need.

Medical tourism is growing at a rate of approximately 20% a year. What is driving the expansion of the medical tourism industry? Countries such as India, Thailand, others have been quick to recognize that the Western world is not providing timely medical care to its citizens. In both the United States and Canada, it is not uncommon to wait for more than 4 months to be seen after a referral is made. Then, there is more waiting time while tests are scheduled. Additional time passes waiting for the test results. If the result is that there is a need for a procedure, it could be several more weeks before surgery is scheduled. Non emergency medical attention may be extended for up to two years. There is basically no wait time in foreign countries that are marketing medical tourism.

Those in the medical tourism industry also recognize that time is a precious commodity. Another aspect to the trends of medical tourism is to market to those who have little vacation or sick leave available to them. Multitasking is not new in the business world, and countries desiring to attract the medical tourist are appealing to those who would like to have an exotic and affordable vacation, but may feel they need to forgo it, in light of the upcoming surgery in the spring. Many countries are marketing their accredited, resort type facilities, and the amenities of the surrounding countryside to those in need of medical services.

India and Thailand are competing for the position of forerunners in the industry. As with many other countries, the aim is to generate the revenue that can then be put into alleviating the extreme poverty in the country. India is to have revenue of 2.3 billion by 2012. In a country that has both the very wealthy and the very poor, it is anticipated that the income from the medical tourism industry will go far in providing aid to the poor and destitute in that country.

In order to attract medical tourists, it is necessary to meet the strictest of standards and provide top quality service in state of the art facilities that more resemble a five star resort than a hospital. The stark white and green walls of the hospitals in the homeland have been replaced with color and beautiful art displays. There are plants everywhere. Some facilities offer swimming pools and fitness centers. Each room or suite of rooms better resembles a hotel room than a hospital room. Each has been meticulously decorated to appeal to the most hard to please tourists. Fresh flowers and fruit are waiting on the tables, plump pillows are plentiful and comfortable furniture is scattered around the room. The majority of marketed facilities that offer medical tourism are accredited by the IOS (International Organization of Standardization) and the JCI (Joint Commission International).

Most of the doctors who work in these medical tourism facilities have studied in the developed countries and then have returned to work in their home countries. If you are having a medical procedure done, rest assured that you will be cared for by highly qualified staff, with proficient translators standing by! Most new facilities are also equipped with the latest equipment such as heart mapping equipment, CT Scanners, Open MRI machines, heart catheterization labs, digital ultrasound and mammogram machines and more.

Yes, it is true that there are state of the art facilities that are sitting in the midst of extreme poverty and it is true that while foreigners are receiving treatment, citizens in the same neighborhood may go without. The short term benefit is that the medical tourist is able to receive timely, affordable, top quality healthcare in a choice destination. The long term goal is to revitalize the economic system of the country. The premise is that by investing the money to build the resort type facilities, send doctors for international training, and massive marketing campaigns; many of these countries will build their way out of poverty. By doing so, they will be able to provide aid to their own citizens, something that is not possible without the revenue that medical tourism brings to the country.

Thailand - An Extreme Travel Experience - Filipinos in Thailand

Thailand - An Extreme Travel Experience - Filipinos in Thailand
  • By Hedda Tan

When Bangkok residents and those in neighboring provinces like Ayutthaya, Hua Hin and Ratchaburi were gearing up for the hottest season in Thailand, 6 young, adventurous Pinoys set out from Manila to fulfill part of their goal - to tour the whole of South East Asia. Their destination? Thailand!
But little did they know it's going to be more than just a taste of the spiciest meal they've ever had in their life, or that it's going to be more than just a beach experience. Here is a story of six friends who came to Thailand for the first time. Their experiences have been so much more than they hoped and planned for, and how they did it would be something you could learn from if you yourself plans to travel Thailand.

Mark, Vangie, Hencel, Hil, Jeff and Sheryll thought they have done all the research they could lay their hands on to arm them with all that they needed for their Thailand trip. But although they did see parts of Thailand they expected,
nothing prepared them for the scorching, energy-draining heat Thailand is famous for especially in the months of March and April.

"Umaga pa lang, mainit na" (in the morning, it's already hot), the group was saying. And that had an impact on their sight seeing plans. They wanted to do more and see more, but the heat was just too much so they had to catch up on some sleep their first couple of days to have the energy to tackle Bangkok streets thereafter.

Nonetheless, those first couple of days, they experienced the historical architecture of Ayutthaya - Thailand's capital before the Thais moved it to Bangkok, also known as Krungthep in the local language. They also had a taste of Thailand waters and sand in tranquil Hua Hin, which is the King's choice of residence for the summer season. Though they didn't have a chance to bump into royalty while there, they were not the least disappointed. They had a chance to see and experience parts of Thailand other than Bangkok even though it's only their first time to travel Thailand.

The morning after their travels in Ayutthaya and Hua Hin, we met the Pinoy travelers at Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha), and took them to the ever famous Floating Market in Damnoen [http://www.siampinoy.com/thailand-travel/damnern-saduak-floating-market-and-rose-garden-2.html]Saduak.
While having a picturesque moment watching the array of Thai fruits, food and crafts along what is known to some as the 'Venice of the East', the group had some regular Thai noodles (bam-i nam) and enjoyed sticky rice topped with ripe mango (kaw niew ma muang) and the cheap, yet very fresh fruits being sold along the khlong (canal). The sellers were cramped with their goods in narrow wooden boats. Not much time to haggle there for customers, lest the boat with the goods you have your eyes on gets swept by other boats.
And of course, the adventure wouldn't be complete without the boat ride along the khlong (canal).
But the most unforgettable experiences the group had came in contrasts. Nearly at the end of their Thailand travels, the group visited the Grand Palace. There, they were awed by the intricacy of the Thais' handiwork on the walls of the temples.
Literally everything spelled "majestic", and they wondered whether the bright colors and the intricate work are true for all Buddhists or is it only in Thailand.
Apart from the grandiosity of the palaces and temples, the Thais' reverence for their King also made a great impression on the group. To them, it's amazing that despite the apparent modern technology in Thailand, people still have a deep respect for and that they still follow their King.
That same night, the group had an 180-degree turn when their travels took them to yet another infamous place to visit in Thailand - Patpong! There they saw another side of Bangkok that is equally amazing but in a totally different way. Though they had a forewarning that they might meet quite aggressive people who would try to convince them they have the best "pingpong" show that side of the city, nothing prepared them for the real experience.

"They really force you to buy their wares", was one of the comments from the group. "Nakakatakot yung inaapproach ka nila tapos hindi ka nila talaga titigilan.Tsaka hindi ko ininom yung soda (when we watched the show), kasi natatakot ako kung ano yung nakalagay doon"
it's scary when they approach you and they don't easily let you go. And I didn't drink the soda because it's scary to think what could be in it), was yet another member's memory of the group's Patpong experience.
What was unexpected by the group was how the women who worked in Patpong reacted to their work situation: "Nakakagulat sa kanila, parang wala lang" (What was surprising was that it seemed like nothing to them). "In fact, nagtatawanan sila (they were laughing). Parang they don't see it as work na; just something natural. They don't see anything wrong about it".

Before the group came for this trip, they heard many stories about Thailand. Surprisingly though, not much was told about Patpong. Many of the stories the group read in blogs and heard about Thailand were scary, but they've found out, they're not all true. One of them says, just be practical. Have the common sense to take the same precautions sensible travelers would take in any country they visit for the first time.
The group also advises, "Do not limit yourself to Bangkok. Thailand is not beaches. Thailand is not Patpong. Thailand is not temples. Thailand is everything!"
And because of that, this group of 6 friends vows to come back. There is yet more to Thailand that they have not experienced. Next time, they would like to go south and explore the island beaches like Krabi and Phuket. They might also go north where the long-neck tribe and the like lives, and where the climate is so much more forgiving especially for travelers.
In the Philippines the group has also seen many beautiful places. And their Thailand experience has only enhanced whatever is good and beautiful about our country.
And that is one message they would like to convey to others back home: to go places beyond the 7,107 islands (or more) of the Philippines. The purpose is not to promote tourism in other countries, but for Pinoys to appreciate what is good about our own. And that is one message they would like to convey to others back home: to go places beyond the 7,107 islands (or more) of the Philippines. The purpose is not to promote tourism in other countries, but for Pinoys to appreciate what is good about our own. This way people will have a better understanding of what works in our country and what does not. From there, it would be easier to correct our mistakes because we will have tangible points of comparison.
As the group leaves Thailand with thought provoking memories, they have this to say to Siam Pinoy, "Thank you sa experience sa Thailand. Yung hospitality, hindi namin expected. Pumunta na kami sa ibang lugar na may kakilala pa kami (we've already gone to places where we even know people). But here, we don't even know you, you don't know us. Yet you spent time for us."
For us in Siam Pinoy, it has been a pleasure. It's not everyday we meet like-minded people. And for those adventurous spirits left back home who plan to unleash themselves in Thailand, here's their piece of advice, "Prepare themselves. Keep an open mind. Ang Thailand, hindi mo right away mahal, e (you don't get to love it right away). But it grows on you. And when they get here, respeto lang sa kultura nila" (just respect their culture).

The Venice of the East As the group of 6 friends go back to their different lives in Manila, they will always have their extreme experiences of Thailand to look back to. A part of them would remember the 'cigarette-smoking' and 'pingpong' ladies of the Thailand nightlife who sell entertainment of another kind.
Another part of the group would look back with awe and wonder at the nationalism of a people and the love they have for their King and country. And that national pride is the part of them, which gives rise to those majestic and intricately decorated temples and palaces Thailand is known for the world over. But for one thing, they are a more proud group of Filipino travelers, appreciating more what is Philippines after learning and experiencing what lies beyond our borders.

Dental Implants from Thailand & Dental Tourism

Dental Implants from Thailand & Dental Tourism
  • By Yachika Verma

  • Dental care is one of the important aspects that we as people should take care about. Oral hygiene is one of the most important steps to a healthy body and hence, a healthier life. Dental treatment in today's times has progressed leaps and bounds and solves problems of a lot of people worldwide.

One of the new concepts in the world of dentistry is Dental tourism. The term might perplex you or get your thoughts churning. But it's nothing odd or nothing to be curious about. Dental tourism simply means planning a vacation and along with it, getting your teeth taken care of by a dentist where you are going for the holiday. Dentist treatment is not affordable in some of the progressive countries like the USA and UK. Even across the whole of Europe, the dentists can cost almost 8-9 times as much as a dentist in Bangkok would cost.
Do not be mistaken about the standard of the treatment you are going to receive because rest assured, it is going to be nothing short of world class. In recent times, it has become a hub of dental care solutions for tourists all over the world and people basically want to invest in this because not only do they get their dental care cheaper, but they also plan a holiday along with it and can see the beautiful locales of a scenic city like Bangkok.

What is the reason behind the huge difference of costs in both the continents? Well quiet simply put, it is the cost of labor which makes all the difference in the world. In a city like Bangkok, the labor is far cheaper then, let's say, a dentist in Chicago. And at the same time, the quality of the dentistry is as same, if not better, in Bangkok. That is where people have decided to invest smartly in a budding concept like Dental tourism. People not only can get their treatment done, but can enjoy quality time with their loved ones while taking a break from the routine of hectic work back home.

Dental Implant Thailand in recent times has paid host to 1.4 million tourists from the world over who have come to avail dental facilities and also tour the country for a vacation. The reason simply is the glittering services it offers in both the fields. The growing relevance and sheer popularity of such a concept is not only good for the people who are availing this facility, it is good for both the tourism sector and the noble profession of medicine.

Facilities like this are keen to serve humanity with some pleasure involved. They should be promoted in order to build a healthy and united world where we can cross boundaries, even if for a bad tooth.

Thailand's World

Thailand's World
  • By James L Andrew

  • Thailand is a modern democratic Nation in Central South East Asia. '' Thai '' is the Tai word for '' free ''. The '' Thai '' identity was formed in the late 13 th C at Sukhothai and is not to be confused with '' Tai '' the name of the ethnic groups of people who migrated from Yunnan in the 12th & 13th Centuries. The character of the Thai Nation today and of its people can only be appreciated by exploring its 2000 years of recorded history and the cultures of the various peoples who live here. Thailand's natural landscape includes tropical wet evergreen forests in Southern Thailand to temperate deciduous forests in North Thailand and we explore these in the Thailand National Parks. Thailand art architecture and decorative objects need to be considered with regard to the influences of religion, mythological beliefs and regional artistic styles. Thailand is so large and diverse we detail all about Thailand in separate regions, North or Northern Thailand, South or Southern Thailand, Central Thailand and North East Thailand [ I 'san ].

North Thailand Travel & Places Of Interest
The Thailand Government defines North Thailand as consisting of both [ 1 ] the 84,000 square kilometres comprising 8 provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Lampang, Lamphun, Phrae and Mae Hong Son, which area originally comprised the Lan Na principalities detailed in the North Thailand History link [ the Upper North ], and [ 2 ] the 86,000 square kilometres of the Lower North, comprising the provinces of Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Phichit Phitsanulok and Phetchabun, which area originally comprised the Kingdoms of Sukhothai and later the northern parts of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, Thon Buri and Bangkok Kingdoms.

The Differences Between The Upper North Thailand And The Lower North Thailand
One discernable difference between the Upper and Lower North Thailand is topography. Upper North Thailand is characterised by long valleys generally running north south. The climate has three seasons, hot [ April to May ] cool and rain [ July to September ]. Approximately 72% of the area is mountainous, 21% upland and 8% lowland. The lowland is cultivated by the Tai people to produce wet rice.

Lower North Thailand has 45% of its total land mass less than 150 metres above sea level and is thus similar to Thailand's Central region. However the two mountain extensions of the Upper North, [ 1 ] Thanon Thang Chai Range to the west and, [ 2 ] Petchabun Range to the east attract an extension of swidden hill tribe communities as in the Upper North, all part of the exodus from China of these ethnic minorities over the past hundreds of years. The geographic differences in topography need to be appreciated as the ethnic, sociological and cultural differences are essentially between lowlanders and highlanders [ Hill tribes ]. These classifications and detailed explanations are discussed in North Thailand People .

    • About Central Thailand

Central Thailand is situated on the central plains of the Chao Phraya River and the Meklong River valley. The first substantial civilisation here was that of the Mon people and during the 6th - 9th C its Buddhist Kingdom was referred to in chinese records and on silver coins as '' Dvaravati ''. Influences from India when merged with Mon characteristics formed the basis of religion, art, architecture and public administration.

    • About South Thailand

South Thailand comprises the Southern Peninsula with the Andaman Sea to the West and the Gulf of Siam to the East. It is a mountainous region and the Phuket Mountain Range is the most important on the West from Chumphon to Krabi and to the East is the Nakhon Si Thammarat Mountain Range from Surat Thani to Satun. Between these ranges are the plains and limestone hills and to the South the Sannkalakhiri Mountains which divide Malaysia and Thailand.

Thailand has in excess of 138 wildlife sanctuaries and National Parks. The major locations are listed in the opposite links and we detail 20 National Parks and eco tourism locations. Thailand is home to over 15,000 species of vascular plants and 16,000 species of animals
Thailand travel and tourism to Thailand places of interest is not a matter of a few choices as is the case with many Asia destinations. Thailand is large and diverse with a large selection of travel and holiday options. In 2005 over 14 million tourists visited Thailand and their range of interests varied.

The Two Faces of Thailand's Property Market

The Two Faces of Thailand's Property Market
  • By David S Redfern

Potential investors who are currently considering an overseas property purchase in Asia, will probably have Thailand on their short-list at the outset, but upon looking into it will find that property investment in Thailand is currently a two sided coin:

On the one hand Bangkok has recently been listed among the top twenty tourism destinations in the world, which should make a property investment there a good one. Dig a little deeper however and you find that capital appreciation, -- previously strong in Thailand -- along with all factors to be considered before investing, have been detrimentally affected by the recent political turmoil, namely the September 2006 coup.
Never the less Thailand is still among the best Asian countries for foreigners to invest in, there is no inheritance tax or gift tax, capital gains tax is charged like income tax at the standard rate, and foreigners can own condominiums freehold. There are other ways for foreigners to buy in Thailand but a condominium purchase is the easiest. And even with the political turmoil as it is rental yields are still around the 8% mark in top tourist destination, Bangkok.

Another rising star in Asia's tourism industry is the Thai island of Koh Samui, which has been largely unaffected by turmoil on the mainland, and where potential investors will find mostly resort property.
As tourism expands on the island, and it begins to attract more of the high end market, as oppose to primarily back-packers, these resort villa properties can fetch yields of 10-12% quite easily, and capital appreciation is conservatively estimated at around the 15%-20% mark.

Total transaction costs are a moderate 10% - 12.3% in Thailand, but there is a little complication over the computation of buying costs; specific business tax and stamp duty are paid on whatever is higher, declared or assessed value -- both parties must have their own solicitor.

Overall a Thailand property investment can be a very rewarding endeavour, especially if you are purchasing a holiday home with a view to renting it out when not in use.

Medical Tourism - World-class Treatment At Layman's Price

Medical Tourism - World-class Treatment At Layman's Price
By Suzanne Macguire
Consumerism is the new mantra of the present generation. People want value for money for every purchase they make. When almost every imaginable service is near at hand, can medical treatment be far behind? Of late, "doctor shopping" is the phrase that is circling the medical arena. This phrase refers to the rapidly increasing number of patients who choose to undergo medical treatment in foreign countries. People, especially in the US and the UK have realized that the medical treatment offered in their countries is highly expensive in comparison to such Asian and African countries like India, Thailand, Bangkok, Cuba, and Lithuania. These developing nations offer world-class healthcare and medical facilities to overseas patients. While the citizens of these nations find it hard to afford such facilities, patients from the US or other European countries find it quite affordable. Besides an inexpensive vacation package in these countries makes the whole process of treatment extremely attractive.
Before the discussing the pros and cons of medical tourism, it is necessary to glance at the origin of this trend. Medical tourism is not a new phenomenon. According to David Morgan, this phenomenon was perceptible in the early 19th century when no restrictions were imposed on the movement of people in Europe. Initially, mere traveling was considered a good therapy for physical as well as mental health. Later, the wealthy families began to make trips to the Swiss Lakes, the Alps, and special tuberculosis sanatoriums, where professional and specialized medical care was offered. The scenario improved further in the 21st century. Thailand, followed by India, Puerto-Rico, Argentina, Cuba, and Malaysia quickly emerged as the hottest medical tourism destinations. Complicated surgeries like hip and knee replacement surgery, dental works, cosmetic surgery, kidney dialysis, organ transplant and sex change topped the list of the popular procedures performed in these destinations. According to survey reports, in 2002, six hundred thousand medical tourists came to Bangkok and Phuket medical centers in Thailand, while approximately one hundred and fifty thousand foreign patients visited India in the same period. It is also estimated that by 2012, medical tourism in India will generate an astonishing $2.1 billion dollars in revenue. This assumption, however, is based on the fact that around 600 Baby Boomers from the US, Australia and Europe will age and seek medical care by that time span. This assumption has led many countries to treat the medical tourism sector as a profitable business. The Indian Government has also shown its interest in this sector by adopting various provisions to promote this industry. In Philippines, the medical tourism industry was included in last year Investment Priorities Plan. These trends are enough to justify the phenomenal growth of the medical tourism industry in the present age.
The major attraction of medical tourism to the innumerable number of overseas patients is its affordable cost. When compared to the expenses of medical treatment in the US, the prices in the Third World countries seem a mere trifle. In the US, there are approximately 43 billion people without health insurance and 120 million without dental coverage. In case of an emergency medical treatment, they are required to pay for the treatment either in cash or take out a loan. The ordinary citizens, especially the uninsured lot, find it hard to meet these estimated expenses. According to the CBC News, a cardiac surgery in the United States and the United Kingdom on average costs from $30,000 to $50,000, while root canal costs approximately $3,500. In such situations, medical tourism offers an excellent solution for such financial crunches. In India, for instance, example, the above-mentioned procedures can cost anywhere from $4000 to $9000 and $200 to $400, respectively.
Next comes the issue related to formalities involved prior to undergoing any medical treatment. In medical tourism destinations, not only are the paperwork hassles comparatively less, but also the liability policies are less strict. According to the News Target, "many MDs ...insist that as much as 80 percent of all healthcare dollars that go through their office cover nothing but paperwork". In addition, medical doctors spend a large percentage of their income on insurance coverage in a case of lawsuits, further increasing healthcare costs.
Time is another factor that lures patients to medical tourism spots from all over the world. In developed countries, the public healthcare system is too overburdened to perform all its duties on scheduled time. The situation is worse for those who need immediate treatment. Hence, the only option for these patients is to fly abroad for medical attention. Medical tourism has thus offered American and European citizens some better options than visiting their own doctors.
These advantages of medical tourism are more than adequate to score over European or American healthcare facilities. The only sound advice that foreign patients should keep in mind (while in a medical tourism destination) is to be prepared for some emergency expenses that might emerge on account of any medical complications. However, such cases are rare and the outcome is mostly satisfactory. Glancing at the present scenario, it would not be wrong to conclude that medical tourism is here to stay and invite universal acclaim.

Five Effects of the Current Crisis in Thailand and Medical Tourism - World-class Treatment At Layman's Price

Five Effects of the Current Crisis in Thailand
  • By Mark W. Medley

Whatever events have led to the current strife inside the commercial business district in Bangkok, Thailand, could have a ripple effect outside this divided nations borders. However, there are five immediate effects this current crisis does have globally.

  • 1. Tourism

Thailand is a major hub for visitors heading fir South-East Asia from Europe. Most international flights do link to Bangkok-which often means visitors to nearby Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam may have to connect through the Airport. Obviously many visitors would be reluctant to fly through Don Mueang airport, and this could temporary affect the economies of its neighbors- reducing visitor numbers to the region.

  • 2. Thailand's Image

Internationally Thailand carefully developed an image of beauty, friendliness, tolerance and peace.- something the televised images of the battles inside Bangkok, have changed for many. Thailand could be in the future be portrayed in a more negative light..

  • 3. Economy

Thailand is not dependent on tourism, but more dependent on this industry then its neighbors. The nation also exports agricultural province to Europe, and Bangkok is a regional business center. Investors may pull out, preferring other safer countries in the region, and consumers boycott products if they disagree with how the crisis unfolds.

  • 4. Regional Currencies

The 'Baht" is a freely tradable International currency. Since 2009, it has still remained stable against most currencies, however if events get worse, it could be devalued. This may not lead to the tourist 'boom' seen in the late 1990's, when the baht devalued and millions visited Thailand for its 'cheapness.' - as visitors may be frightened to visit the Country.

  • 5. The Nations International Standing

Diplomatically Thailand may have problems representing itself effectively, which in turn could frighten investors, and visitors. Pressure may bear down on both political sides in this current dispute, to force a compromise for the good of the nation, rather than hurt its image more by continuing the violence.
South-East Asiais a peaceful and very open region to visit or conduct business. The current crisis in Thailand, should have no effects on its neighbors, except in short- term visitor numbers. Anyone wishing to visit the region, should not be affected by the crisis, as long as they avoid "hotspots" within' Thailand.

The Rise and Fall of Thailand - Find Out Their Secret in Overcoming Calamities
  • By Irsan Komarga

Thailand is a country that is mainly dependent on foreign export and tourism. For the past years this little kingdom has been the leading holiday destination for people from all walks of life, most especially for budget conscious traveler. Pristine beaches, fascinating tradition, crowded street, and centuries of beliefs all added to their allure.

The Indian Ocean earthquake that has devastated the country of Thailand in 2004 has left many people dead, and almost a quarter of millions of citizen across 11 countries has loss their life. Yet, this number for a lot of people in the Western World is not considered that staggering, the memory of this disaster has faded in just a couple of months. However, when the Titanic in 1912 had sank killing 1517 people after colliding with an iceberg, was more remembered by nearly all teenagers in America. Sad to say, but it is true.
The kingdom of Thailand is one of the countries that were badly hit. It has received tremendous media exposure due to its booming tourism business, and the fact is that a number of people who died from the storm are foreigners staying in expensive resorts. An estimated 8000 or more people has died. But other nation such as Sri Lanka was never given much media coverage.

In spite of this, Thailand immediately recovered from the catastrophe. Foreign nation has pledge their support in the rebuilding of the nation. Tourism started picking up again, well known Actor and Actresses namely Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt promoted the country in every tabloid sold in supermarket across America. However, the nation at the same time experience political instability, which resulted in slowing down of the tourism industry. Bookings went down dramatically.

This year, however, the kingdom is already in the process of recovering from their economic meltdown. Foreign travelers are once again coming to the country to spend their vacation. In fact, in 2008 tour operators from different countries who have experience slowdown are now reporting stable increase in bookings for 2009. A good sign that recession are finally coming to end in Thailand.

This little nation that has been marred by many tragedies in the past years, is nevertheless still struggling, but doing well at the moment and hopefully for the years to come. Regardless of its many difficulties, the Thai people promised to make the country safer and hospitable to all visitors even from the western country. Thailand has overcome the worst that nature has thrown at them. Let us just hope and pray that his tragedy may never take place again. A tsunami warning system that has been place after the disaster must help curb the loss of life.

Is it Safe to Travel to Thailand?

Is it Safe to Travel to Thailand?
  • By Paula Westberg

Over the last six months, Thailand has reached the headlines across the globe. In November 2008, the "Yellow Shirts" held the International Airport at Bangkok under siege, and over the last few weeks, the country has faced another national emergency, when the "Red Shirts" decided to fight back with their protests in Bangkok. Yet, in many areas of Thailand, all seems peaceful and quiet, and there are no signs of these political protests. No sign that is, apart from the concern and worry of the locals, and the quieter bars, restaurants and hotels.

  • The issues behind these protests are complex, but to put it as simply as possible:

The Yellow Shirts (also known as The People's Alliance for Democracy or PADs), agree with the concept of democracy, but also feel that people need to have some understanding of the long term economic, social and political consequences of their vote. They believe that Thaksin used corruption to gain the vote of the majority population of the rural regions of Northern Thailand, on the lead up to the 2001 elections that made him prime minister.

  • The Red Shirts, however, see Thaksin more as a Robin Hood character, who took from the rich and gave to the poor. They believe they would be financially better off both in the short term and the long term under the rule of Thaksin. Now, Thaksin faces corruption charges, and an unelected party and prime minister are ruling their country. As a result, they feel cheated.
  • Who is right and who is wrong is not for discussion here. We are currently more concerned with the impact these struggles could have on the economy of Thailand and on the number of tourists who want to visit. When the first major protests began in November 2008, many holidaymakers cancelled their trip, and having just recovered from the impact of the Tsunami, many businesses in the tourism industry of Thailand faced yet another season of lowering tourist numbers. The fallout from this is wide spread. Entire families rely on the income delivered by tourism to survive.

As such a high proportion of the population in the tourist hotspots of Thailand survive on the income of tourism alone, the majority of the locals in these places want nothing but a peaceful resolution. They want foreigners to continue to regard Thailand as The Land of Smiles.

  • Whilst no one wishes to encourage you to walk into the middle of a conflict, I'm sure I'm speaking for the large majority when I ask you to consider the real impact of these struggles on your visit to Thailand. Neither the Reds nor the Yellows have an issue with tourists or expats, but if you are concerned about the recent troubles in Bangkok, I would like to highlight that you do not need to fly to Bangkok if you wish to visit Thailand. You can fly from Kuala Lumpur to Krabi, or fly direct into Phuket. From there you can go straight to your final holiday destination, where a warm welcome and a peaceful atmosphere awaits - just as tourists have grown to expect from Thailand - The Land of Smiles.

Why On Earth Invest in Thailand's Bangkok?

Why On Earth Invest in Thailand's Bangkok?
  • By Nicholas Marr

Thailand investment potential for overseas property buyers are enormous. Expanding tourism, easy accessibility and low property prices make for an investors paradise.

  • Thai culture has always been greatly influenced by China and India giving an exotic blend for which The Kingdom of Thailand has become famous. Buyers in Thailand tend to be mostly investors who are looking to cash in on the booming tourist industry however with increasing demand this is set to change.

Overseas investors will be pleased that Bangkok recently opened a new airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), often called New Bangkok International Airport, which is 25 kilometers east of downtown. This facility has flights from all over the world on most major airlines. The old international airport, Don Muang (DMK), is open for limited domestic flights.

  • The Bangkok real estate market is one of the best for international investors who are interested in the Asian market. Research shows that the property market here is much more affordable than other south Asian cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore. Bangkok has a very nice climate year round and is also close to many recreational activities, such as beaches and tropical resorts.

Because of low labour costs and relatively inexpensive housing, many multinational corporations have made Bangkok one of their overseas homes. This has, in turn, drawn a lot of international businessmen and expatriates to the city looking for high quality housing at reasonable prices. There continues to be a healthy demand for property, meaning that investments should continue to rise in value for the foreseeable future.
The city is one of contrasts, with its fast growing urban skyline and many old temples and historical sights. It is also growing increasingly cosmopolitan with high end shopping, entertainment and fine dining. Because of Thailand's strict foreign ownership laws, apartments and condominiums are the option of choice for most international property seekers in Bangkok.

  • The new property available in Bangkok is attractive to in the middle and upper-middle income buyers. These properties are typically one and two bedroom units ranging in size between 45 square meters to 80 square meters. Moving up towards the high-end market, new additions were seen in the Sathorn, Silom and Sukhumvit areas, with the majority of condo units offered being two and three bedrooms from 90 square meters to 190 square meters.

My other tip for the top in Thailand is the city of Pattaya which is to be found on the east coast of Tourism in this area appears to be increasing year on year. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand 5.8 million people visited Pattaya in 2006. The combination of its big, wide beaches, water sports, interesting attractions, sightseeing, shopping, makes Pattaya's a great place to buy property in Thailand.
In summary Thailand offers a host of opportunities for the international real estate investor.
