Tourism to Thailand has lately suffered considerable damage to its tourist industry as a result of the political upheaval experienced in the last few months.
Rather like football fans displaying their allegiances, protesters have identified themselves by the colour of their shirts. First, the yellow shirts were on the streets, demanding the resignation of a government they saw as a puppet of exiled ex-prime minister Taksin Shinawatra. That was successful, but involved occupations at Bangkok airports, causing enormous inconvenience to tourists, as well as bad publicity for the country. The Government did indeed resign, but enter the Red Shirts, who demanded the new Government go, and Taksin be returned to the country with new elections. They obviously believed that Mr Taksin would be victorious in a new election. Then enter the Blue Shirts, who attacked the Red Shirts in their recent demonstrations. The leader of the yellow shirts has been shot and wounded, and the leader of the red shirts is in hiding. The new Government clings to power, but for how long, no-one knows.
What the Yellow and Red shirt protestors failed to realise was the damage done to Thailand's tourist industry. This is major earner of foreign currency, and supports hundreds of thousands of direct jobs, and even more indirect jobs.

Tourists became worried, and stopped coming. Some Bangkok hotels have seen occupancy rates fall to as low as 30%. Estimates of tourist revenue losses are upwards of US$500 million. In these credit crunch days, this is more than the country can afford. Many thousands of hotel workers have been laid off.
The political situation is currently calm, which Hotel and Tour Operators hope will last.
To assist the Tourist Industry, the Thai Government is introducing soft loans to businesses in the tourist industry hit by the upheavals. More than US$250 million has been set aside. Thailand is extremely popular as a tourist destination, with several million visitors a year. Visitors looking to visit in the coming holiday season will fervently hope politics takes a back seat, and life, and tourism, can get back to normal.

It is not uncommon to be out at night in a bar or restaurant in Chiang Mai and hear the sound of an elephant trumpeting. Nonetheless, it hardly seems like a typical day in the life of an ordinary elephant. Unfortunately for some, however, it has become just that. Though the numbers have dramatically decreased in recent years, a handful of street mahouts still take these jungle creatures out into traffic on a nightly pub crawl begging for food. They walk around with bags of peanuts, mostly in congested tourist areas; the bags are then sold and the peanuts fed to the elephants. Many people also make some monetary contribution in order to have a photo taken next to them while tipping back a cocktail. You must admit it's a bit of a novelty and hardly something most westerners experience in their home towns.

• Elephants have long been an integral part of Thai society and culture for hundreds of years. They were often used in battles as transportation for Kings and other royal army officers. At one time, the population of elephants in Thailand was around 100,000 as opposed to around 4,000 today. Elephants were often captured and used for logging and then, after its ban in the late 1980's, many entered into the tourism industry performing in various shows, trekking camps, along with street begging, and often mistreated.

One person who has tried rather successfully to put an end to elephant abuse and return them to a more natural environment is a woman by the name of "Lek". It is hard to imagine at first glance that her petite frame is capable of encapsulating her larger than life spirit.


I first read about Lek when I was researching elephant trekking and camps for a friend's website. I hadn't given much thought to the ethical considerations of the various tourist packages until I ran across an article describing this woman, who had been named by Time magazine as "2005 Asian Hero of the Year". The more I read about her work with elephants and the Elephant Nature Park she set up not far from Chiang Mai town, I could not help but feel persuaded to forgo recommending any other places in the Kingdom.
There is plenty of information for those interested in riding elephants and every tourist office has stacks of brochures to choose from. I, on the other hand, set out to learn more about her alternative. I drove out of town one morning early for about an hour and made my way to the entrance of Elephant Nature Park. She had been expecting me and, when we arrived, a woman standing near the outside kitchen waved and motioned me to come over. It was Lek and she was busy helping to prepare one of the daily meals for more than 60 fulltime staff and several volunteers.

• Upstairs, day visitors and guides were gathered, drinking complimentary coffee and tea in a large Thai-style wooden building. The grounds, though well managed, maintain the natural beauty of a jungle retreat with plenty of open space surrounded by mountains. I took a seat near a tree and soaked in the stunning environment.

About 30 minutes later, Lek motioned for me to follow her and we headed over to a group of elephants. There was no conversation. I just stood there and watched as she caressed and played with a 4-month old baby elephant for more than 30 minutes. She later told me that this was part of her daily routine.
Unlike typical elephant camps, there is no elephant riding at Elephant Nature Park nor are there any organized performances. However, there is definitely no shortage of entertainment simply observing their behavior which is often quite playful during their daily river time. Guests at the park are encouraged to participate in bathing the creatures while respecting certain guidelines for safety.
All of the elephants Lek has purchased in her rescue efforts suffered some sort of physical or mental abuse. Outside the restaurant, on the wall, photos are displayed with a brief biography of each one. The camp is funded through private donations including fees paid by the volunteers.

• In the afternoon, once she had time to break from her daily elephant activities, Lek and I sat up in a tree and she told me more about the mahouts. Her goal is definitely to get the elephants off of the street yet she is sympathetic to their trainers as well. She feels they must be given a viable alternative that still allows them earn a living. All of the mahouts at her camp are provided with housing, meals, and a monthly salary. She helps obtain legal documents for those who arrive undocumented. Her tone lacked judgment of the mahouts but rather a greater need for education and understanding. Speaking in a soft yet determined voice, she expressed a desire for her fellow countryman to take more interest in the plight of these endangered creatures.

Meanwhile, elephants grazed freely in the surrounding pastures with their mahouts squatted quietly nearby, some alone and others in small groups. Occasionally, during our conversation, Lek turned to look at them briefly, as a mother might while watching her children playing in a park. The bond between Lek and her staff is as obvious as it is with the elephants. There is a mutual respect that lingers in the air and exudes a common love they each feel for the sanctuary they now call home.

• Volunteers may enroll in a program, staying at the park overnight or up to four weeks and take part in daily life with the mammals including bathing them and working alongside the mahouts. In order to alleviate stress on the elephants and maintain a safe environment, only small numbers of tourists may inhabit the park each day.

Future plans include purchasing more land enabling more elephants and trainers to become part of this conservation project. Elephant Nature Park offers a unique alternative for street mahouts as well as tourists. They do not allow unscheduled visits but there is a separate office in Chiang Mai town with detailed information about arranging visits.

At least until recently, tourism has been the third most important sector of Thailand's economy, after agriculture and exports. Among 'industries,' tourism is listed in first place. The country is without doubt one of the world's favorite tourist destinations, in part because of its magnificent natural beauty (of many varieties, not just the famous islands), in part because of the natural friendliness of its people, in further part because of the relative ease and safety of traveling in Thailand, which is easily done on both high and low traveler personal economies.


This situation is now in considerable flux, and concerns about the viability of Thailand's major tourist industry are growing. Currency fluctuations and new economic policies have put a significant dent in exports as a source of GDP, and increasingly severe and unpredictable weather - primarily floods and droughts - throughout the country are an increasing concern to its agriculturalists.
Those changes make the viability of Thailand's tourist industry all the more important. While the country has so far survived threats to the industry such as SARS, bird flu, and the 2004 tsunami relatively intact, tourism officials and operators are only too aware that a more large-scale bird flu epidemic or another tsunami (in a region where earthquakes in Indonesia such as the one that caused the one in 2004 are increasingly frequent) could have a devastating effect on the industry.

• Additionally, the relocating of the country's main airport, an expansive new facility called Suvarnaphumi planned by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to make Bangkok the 'hub of Southeast Asian travel' has been a only slightly mitigated disaster for the country and the source of considerable national shame. Hurried construction, corrupt construction practices, and overall bad planning have yielded a facility many find far inferior to the 95-year-old 'old' airport in Don Muang, for which longtime Thailand visitors had developed an affection, and which worked with seasoned efficiency. The new airport is daily news nationally, with alternating reports about its safety (primarily of the runways) and inconvenience. It is much farther out of the city, making it much more difficult for tourists to get to their Bangkok destinations and to others on their travel itineraries.

There are great fears among observers of Thailand's tourist scene that it will take just one more major problem such as the ones described above to drive tourists to seek other travel destinations in Asia and elsewhere. The effects on Thailand's economy would be devastating if tourism were to drop even a small amount.

This is certainly a high accolade and not to be downplayed in any way, and proves there is more to the Land of Smiles than meets the eye.

• Thailand and Scandinavia have long established a firm and fruitful relationship, with 378,387 Swedish tourists visiting the Kingdom during 2007, generating somewhere in the region of 25 Billion baht in revenue.

14.4 million Foreign nationals visited Thailand in 2007 alone from over 45 different countries. The official 2008 TAT figures have yet to be released, but the mood suggests a slight decrease in tourist numbers due to the worldwide economic problems.
The downturn is clearly a widespread issue, which doesn't represent any failings on the part of Thailand as a major tourist destination in any way. And though businesses in Pattaya, Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai have noticed a minor drop in profits, thing are still carrying on as usual and tourists continue to flock to Thailand's four favorite tourist regions.

• Mike Parry, a U.K. expatriate bar owner in Phuket stated, "The Island is still the place to be, and visitors from all over the world are visiting Phuket in droves, spending big money, and the vibrant atmosphere is still the same as ever. To be honest, we are starting to notice an influx of visitors from more diverse countries than ever before."

The majority of tourists come from Western European nations and Australia, but over the past two years there has been a dramatic rise of visitors from the Middle-East, China, Korea and Japan. This is an ever-growing market which Emirates Airline is quickly trying to accommodate by initiating a new Airbus A380 Megajet service from Dubai to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Chumpol Silpa-archa, Minister of Sports and Tourism explained, "This launch reflects how much the airline expects visitors to increase to Thailand." TAT have projected that visitors from the Middle East will rise 6.5% in 2009, and Emirates must be commended for their vigilance and vision.

• All the major Airlines are also doing their utmost in combating the worldwide economic decline by providing value-for-money flights to encourage greater numbers to visit Thailand. For instance, Qantas/British Airways are beginning to offer special rates on economy tickets from Australia and the United Kingdom to Bangkok. From any major Australian city, British Airways are charging as little as 15,590bht, and 23,650bht from London for roundtrip economy tickets.

The American travel market is also receiving welcome discount prices for economy roundtrip tickets to Bangkok. Northwest and Delta Air Lines are providing tickets from American Cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland, Las Vegas and San Diego for as little as 20,000bht. Salt Lake City to Bangkok economy-class tickets are being offered from 26,500bht for the roundtrip.

• David Phelps, an American national who has been visiting Thailand two times every year for the past decade said, "I wasn't going to come to Thailand on vacation this year, what with the value of the Dollar and the economic hardships. But the airlines and Thailand themselves are making so much of an effort to drop the prices and encourage tourism, I have decided to make my usual pilgrimage to this beautiful country that I love very much."

Repeat visitors make up more than one third of the Thailand tourism trade and this is not a coincidence. The magnetic allure of the country and its wonderful inhabitants is underestimated and is the foundation of the tourist industry. Long term visitors always joke, "Nobody visits Thailand only once."
